AUTHORIZATION FOR COMMERCIAL BANKS TO ISSUE EXPORT PERMITS FOR EXPORTS TO THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA

26 May 2026 | Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

It is recalled that, based on the general economic and financial cooperation agreement between the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Government of the People’s Republic of China, it was previously directed via Ref. No. ባውምዳ/097/99 that all export permits for goods destined for China be processed exclusively through the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE).

However, with the aim of further streamlining the nation’s foreign trade sector, enhancing competitiveness, and creating a more accessible environment for exporters, the National Bank of Ethiopia hereby notifies the public that the aforementioned restriction has been officially lifted.

Accordingly, effective from today, May 26, 2026, all licensed commercial banks in Ethiopia are fully authorized to issue export permits, manage documentary credits, and handle all related banking transactions for goods destined for the People’s Republic of China. All banks are therefore requested to facilitate these export services for their clients in strict compliance with the existing standard foreign exchange and export regulations.
